The weekly news and information program Educational Gateway heard on Forest of The Rain radio discussed the impact of male involvement on student achievement with Ms. Warice Blackmon-Davis of the St. Louis Public Schools. Ms. Blackmon-Davis is the creator and manager of an exceptional program designed to increase the parental engagement of men in the St. Louis Public Schools.
Program Overview
Each month, fathers and father figures gather at Farragut Elementary School to discuss ways to improve learning for students at the school. The men come together as part of the St. Louis Public Schools F.A.C.E. initiative. F.A.C.E. stands for Fathers as Advocates for their Children’s Education.
With more than 20 fathers and father figures attending each meeting thus far this school year, Farragut has a solid base on which to build for the future. At the September meeting, the men began the task of selecting leadership for the group and shared their ideas for helping at the school. Among the items discussed were an upcoming Boy Scouts Night and assisting with the school’s annual Picture Day. The men also discussed serving as volunteer readers on a regular basis for the children in the school.
The F.A.C.E. of SLPS is now in its second year. The initiative began with the 2008/2009 school year as a way of encouraging males to take an active role in schools and in the community. Participants can sign up at any SLPS building. The F.A.C.E. of St. Louis has an advisory board and more than 200 members district-wide.
